Mike started dancing at the age of 6 and realized his love of the art shortly thereafter. Throughout his career, Mike has trained intensively in tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, ballet and partnering as well as performing in musical theatre and modern.
Mike was the 2016 World Tap Dance Champion in the “Battle of the Feet”. Along with his title win, he has won a total of 7 medals in his appearances at the World Tap Dance Championships in Germany, spanning across solo, duet, and group categories. The students Mike has trained have also had their share of success; winning Silver at the “Commonwealth Dance Cup”, and Gold at the “World Tap Dance Championships” for solos he choreographed.
Throughout his career Mike has been fortunate to train with many of the greatest dancers of our time including: Lane Alexander, Nicholas Van Young, Acia Gray, Derick Grant, Sam Weber, Bril Barrett, and Michelle Dorrance to name a few. Mike also recognizes the benefits of continued education in dance, and travels every summer to further his training. In that pursuit, Mike has trained in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, and Germany, among other local and international opportunities.
Mike has performed with Shawn Byfield’s “Funk Factory” and was a founding member of Everett Smith’s tap company “Bringing Tap Back”. More recently, he was a member of the “ONE Movement” anti-bullying performance company. Furthermore, he was recently offered a full-time artist position with the prestigious “Tapestry Dance Company” based in Austin, Texas. Other projects have included: “The Miss America Pageant”, “The Humber River Hospital Benefit”, industrial events for “McDonald’s Canada”, “Geosyntec Consulting”, and “Delta Hotels International”, and a guest solo performance with the “True Jive Pluckers” and the “Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra”. He is also the Canadian representative for the “House of Tap Project”; a collective with the goal of uniting the tap community worldwide.
Mike began teaching dance in 2009. He then went on to spend two years dancing aboard the “Disney Dream” and “Fantasy” cruise ships, before returning home to reignite his teaching career. Mike’s passion for working with children and youth has lead him to mentor as a Youth Facilitator with the Kiwanis “Key Leader” program, and as a workshop leader and guest speaker at the “Kids4Kids” summer leadership camp. Most recently Mike has become a choreographer for the “Canadian National Tap Team” for the “World Tap Dance Championships” in Germany and the “Commonwealth Dance Cup” in South Africa, and “World Performers Canada” for the “World Dance Cup” in Spain.
Mike is proud to have become sought after performer, instructor, guest teacher, and choreographer throughout the GTA and beyond. Mike cherishes his time spent encouraging and inspiring his students, and imbuing them with the same love of dance and performance that has him shuffling down the street.
We are so proud to welcome Mike to EDC for the first time this summer. His Tap classes are sure to be AMAZING!
Emilie began her dance career at age 7. She danced recreationally and competitively for 12 years at “Aspects of Dance” in a variety of styles including: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. When competing with her Musical Theatre groups, solos and duets, Emilie took home numerous scholarships, overall marks and special awards including the “Broadway Bound” award. At age 10, with Musical Theatre becoming a passion and calling, Emilie enrolled in “Student Theatre” where she received extensive dance, vocal and acting training. As a triple threat, Emilie played various roles in musicals such as: Annie, Little Shop of Horrors, Fame, Les Miserables…to name just a few. She has also volunteered at Drury Lane Theatre in Burlington for 11 years. Needless to say, she has spent more time in a theatre than outside of one over the years. Known for always having a smile, Emilie is looking forward to teaching at EDC and hopes her students will develop the same passion she has always had for Musical Theatre!
We are very excited to add Musical Theatre classes to our Summer Intensive Schedule in 2018 and look forward to having Emilie share her love and passion for theatre with our dancers!
